Clay Figures

Between
Heaven & Earth

Recent scientific evidence suggests that clay is one of the building blocks of life on earth. Life from earth itself!  Perhaps that is why clay’s materiality is so human, answering the pull of gravity and recording every touch.

All the figures in this series are ‘miniature’ sized, like the Roman lares, or household gods. For the contemporary pieces I often worked from fashion photographs which are enigmatic statements—heavy with ‘attitude’—of contemporary values. It is perhaps a bit ironic to imply their potential to be household gods.

I am interested in Dialogues;  between characters, across centuries,  between humans and art objects.  Binding, masks and blindfolds appear in this work, as do cellphones and baseball.
